Abstract

The Rāmāyaṇa, authored by the sage Vālmīki, is far more than an ancient epic; it serves as a foundational pillar of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and a definitive blueprint for Indian cultural heritage. This paper explores the multi-dimensional framework of the Rāmāyaṇa, analyzing how it codifies complex socio-political, philosophical, and ethical systems that continue to govern Indian consciousness.
At the core of the epic lies the concept of Dharma (righteous duty), which is systematically illustrated through familial, societal, and state dynamics. By examining the narrative architecture, this study highlights the epic's contributions to early Indian political science (Rājadharma or statecraft) via the model of Rāmarājya (ideal governance marked by justice, welfare, and equity). Furthermore, the text functions as a reservoir of ecological wisdom, geographical mapping of the Indian subcontinent, and psychological insights into human relationships and conflict resolution.
Beyond its textual boundaries, the Rāmāyaṇa has shaped India's intangible cultural heritage through regional adaptations, visual arts, performing arts, and oral traditions, creating a unified civilizational identity while allowing for vast pluralistic expression. Ultimately, this paper demonstrates that the Rāmāyaṇa is not a static historical relic but a living, dynamic repository of knowledge that offers sustainable, timeless solutions to modern ethical and societal dilemmas.
