Abstract

This paper examines the concept of Sthitapragya (a person of steady wisdom) from the Bhagavad Gita as a practical framework for addressing modern stress, particularly among youth. It argues that stress is not merely an external phenomenon but an internal process shaped by patterns of thought, especially the “chain of thoughts” that leads from fear and attachment to anxiety, confusion, and emotional breakdown. Drawing upon key verses from the Gita, the study analyzes how uncontrolled desire, fear of failure, and excessive focus on future outcomes contribute to mental distress and, in extreme cases, suicidal tendencies.

Through textual analysis and observation of contemporary student life, the paper demonstrates that the Gita offers a psychological model of mind management. The principle of nishkāma karma (action without attachment to results) and the ideal of Sthitapragya provide practical tools for breaking negative mental loops, cultivating emotional balance, and fostering resilience. The study concludes that adopting a present-focused, action-oriented mindset, combined with inner stability and self-awareness, can significantly reduce stress and enhance mental well-being, making the Gita highly relevant in the context of modern stress management.        Keywords: Sthitapragya.
